An Obama-appointed judge rules its indefinite detention provisions likely violate the 1st and 5th Amendments
A federal district judge today, the newly-appointed Katherine Forrest of the Southern District of New York, issued an amazing ruling: one which preliminarily enjoins enforcement of the highly controversial indefinite provisions of the National Defense Authorization Act, enacted by Congress and signed into law by President Obama last December. This afternoon’s ruling came as part of a lawsuit brought by seven dissident plaintiffs — including Chris Hedges, Dan Ellsberg, Noam Chomsky, and Birgitta Jonsdottir — alleging that the NDAA violates ”both their free speech and associational rights guaranteed by the First Amendment as well as due process rights guaranteed by the Fifth Amendment of the United States Constitution.”

Scientists Use Modified Virus To Make Mice Live Longer
An experimental gene therapy recently tested on mice at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre found that by modifying a non-replicating virus to trigger production of an enzyme that repairs chromosomes, scientists were able to slow down cellular aging in the mice by up to 24 percent.
The study, published this month in the scientific journal EMBO Molecular Medicine, is the first of its kind. Prior anti-aging techniques had been tested only on creatures that had been genetically modified before birth, but this new therapy goes to work directly on a healthy, living subject’s genes.
Mice treated at 2-years-old saw their lifespans increase by up to 15 percent, but scientists said that mice treated at 1-year-old saw the most benefit, with lifespans that lasted up to 24 percent longer.
“In addition to living longer, engineered mice had stronger bones, improved metabolic functions, better motor coordination and balance, as well as improved performance in object-recognition tests,” research director Bruno Bernardes de Jesus said in the study’s executive summary.
“This work provides an important first proof-of-principle that telomerase gene therapy is a feasible and potentially safe approach to improve the healthy lifespan of older organisms,” Utz Herbig, assistant professor at the New Jersey Medical School-University Hospital Cancer Center, explained in an analysis published by EMBO Molecular Medicine. “One of the next steps will be to investigate if similar results can be obtained for other mammals that live significantly longer than mice.”
Lesbian Woman Arrested After Seeking Marriage License In North Carolina
Yesterday, Mary Jamis and her partner joined eight other gay and lesbian couples to seek a marriage license at the Register of Deeds office in Winston-Salem. Although the other couples left the office after being denied, Jamis and a straight friend of hers who joined the protest chose to remain behind and refuse to leave until Jamis was given her constitutional right to marry the person she loves.
This is at least the third time a North Carolina woman was arrested simply for insisting upon her constitutional right to be free from marriage discrimination. Last fall, a lesbian couple who had been together for 30 years were arrested after seeking a marriage license in Asheville, NC.

Old Testament =/= New Testament. Seriously. Also, Leviticus also commands you to learn the Torah, which, if you’re getting Old and New confused, you clearly haven’t.
Not to mention the other ridiculous laws in Leviticus (and Deuteronomy, as well), including the following:
- No mixing of different types of fabric
- No having sex with a woman on her period
- Curse your mother or father? You must be killed
- Disabled people cannot worship God
- Stubborn children should be stoned.
So…. still want to argue how valid the OT is?
Also, in the Bible!=Jesus said it, anyway. Even in the NT, there are a lot of people who aren’t Jesus giving their opinions.

Having been Jewish for, you know, ever, I am endlessly amused at the Christian Right’s reliance on Leviticus. Even I, who didn’t understand the theological difference between Catholics and Protestants until I took a course on Christianity in college, knew that Jesus was totes anti-Leviticus.

I love it when self-professed “Christians” don’t know the ABSOLUTELY MOST SIMPLE basics of the difference between the Old and New Testament. If you are against gay marriage because of Leviticus, you should also keep kosher and be against tattoos. Otherwise you’re just another FLAMING HYPOCRITE.
